WORKING DOGS ON A SHOOT - a novice beater's report

October sees the beginning of the pheasant shooting season and a group of gundog trainees had their first experience of working their dogs.

Here Liz Palmer sums up her experience:

'The shoot last week was great fun. Having not been on one before I did not know what to expect but everyone was very friendly and helpful in explaining what was required. The day consisted of 6 drives, with breaks in between. For the first drive I kept Clover my Labrador on a lead just to be sure she was under control and was not fazed by the gun shot and birds running around. The remaining 5 drives she was off lead which was great experience for her and I am sure the training we had done in steadiness helped immensely. We came home from the day covered in scratches and absolutely exhausted, but can't wait for the next one!'

Poole Town and Country Show - Upton Country Park  7th and 8th August

Purbeck Gundog School had a huge success at this show - the first time we've appeared there - putting on gundog demonstrations in the main arena, running a scurry which was very popular with the general public and manning a stand which attracted lots of attention.   We have had very positive feedback from the organisers who have invited us to appear again next year and one of the most encouraging comments from them was about the friendliness and good atmosphere generated by the club and it's members

Ellingham Show - Somerley Estate, Ringwood  14 August

Another great day out - the weather was very kind to us there! - and another success. We had our own arena where we were able to put on demonstrations with the dogs and again ran a very popular scurry. If you click on the following link you can play a video about the show, which features an interview with Sandra promoting the gundog school!

Hamptworth Country Fayre - Hamptworth Estate  15th August

Club members helped run two quite challenging scurries at this lovely little country fayre and some of them competed and did very well with their dogs - nice to see that all that training has paid off!

Photos from the above events are now on the photos page.

**Christine and Sandra would like to say a huge thank you to all those who helped with the above events - we really couldn't have done it without you. We both appreciate the fact that you gave up some of your valuable spare time to help us. A special mention to Mick and Julie who as ever were brilliant, thanks Liz and Ros for the cakes and to Derek who was a saviour with a jug of Pimms! Thanks to all those who lent their dogs in the demos and to everyone else who worked hard on the scurries and stand**
